BOOK PICKS OF THE WEEK - January 23 - 28th

Never in my life could I’ve imagine I would be on the inside of a prison cell, but sure enough in 1995, that is exactly what happened. You see, I was the ultimate good girl – perfect student, church-going, never got in trouble girl. I also was an outcast, never fitting in. Even though I knew better, it was really easy for me to succumb to peer pressure.

Little did I know, being popular was not all it was cracked up to be. I should have “stayed in my lane.” But common sense did not prevail and I found myself in a situation that would change my life forever. It was the worst time, but yet it ended up being exactly what I needed to get my life back on track.

Thankfully, the story didn’t end there. Come along for the ride in Once Broken…A Journey to Restoration!

Marissa you can’t just walk out on your career, your marriage, everything.” Nona said to her supervisor of the past ten years.

Nona had watched Marissa’s practice flourish as a practitioner specializing in taking care of AIDS patients and their families. But, she had also watched her take care of Tomas, her husband of seven years and put up with all kind of things from others. If anyone needed to just go and be, it was Marissa Sanders.

“I can and I am. Nona, I feel as if I am floating above my own life and more than anything I need to be grounded. I didn’t see a way out of this because I’m responsible for all of this, this practice, your livelihood, not to mention my home, car, Tomas… but I prayed and prayed and who knew that my father, the man I haven’t seen since he stood over my mom’s casket would provide me with the bounty I needed, a man who never acknowledged me in life because he had another life.”

Nona knew that to be true. Marissa’s mother passed away a few years ago and the man who fathered her and had been a secret showed up at the funeral with his protective entourage. After two days, he disappeared again but several months ago, Marissa received an inheritance from him that changed if not her life, it completely changed her bottom line and she needed to get away. The only thing she hadn’t done was tell Tomas. It no longer mattered how he felt about it, she was done. At fifty-three it was time to become grounded in taking care of Marissa.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: STOP Asking for Permission & Give Notice: How To Accept & Attain Who You Are Without Validation by Charron Monaye

Author, Playwright, and all-around Writer, Charron Monaye shares her journey from pain to peace, outlining steps everyone can take to create an unapologetic life while removing toxic people and hardships. Faced with a divorce, eviction, unemployment, and emotional breakdowns, this single mother struggled to make ends meet and provide the basic necessities for her two children. Ultimately, she was faced with a decision: allow life's challenges to overwhelm her or STAND UP and OWN her life.

Unlike countless self-help books that preach about the things one needs to do to "obtain" the right life, STOP Asking for Permission & Give Notice shares Charron Monaye’s insights to maintaining a life that is rich simply by owning it. She gives the reader access to her successes by focusing on the three areas of personal ownership that must be refined to bring true liberation, which she has termed "the 3 A's" --Acknowledge, Accept, Attain. She makes clear that your legacy in life is not defined by your failures, personal decisions, or the opinions of others, but ordained to be exactly what YOU deem to be rewarding.

What would you like readers to take away from your book?

Ultimately, that you do not need permission to live the life you desire. You have the right, obligation, and duty to create a life full of experiences and memories. No one should have the ability to come into your life and deter you from your purpose.

What did you learn about yourself in terms of your strong points and weak points while writing this book?

Since this book is my personal story from “Seeking Validation” to “Accepting my Voice”, I learned “why” I allowed the seeking and the “how” I was going to move forward in my acceptance. I realized that my life experiences and setbacks were a direct reflection of how I viewed and treated myself. Life was only giving me what I was already giving myself and to correct that pattern, I had to correct my mindset on how I saw me. Writing this book was therapy and the release I needed to change my life, while providing fresh perspective to others if they too lived a life of seeking approval first.

What advice would you offer to someone whose book is about to be released?

Don’t assume that everybody knows who you are and that you have a book. Don’t assume that people are going to buy your book or support your vision. Don’t just release your book and expect for it to work and run off shelves because you posted one message on social media or called your friends and family. You have to promote, share, speak, and live your book every day, especially if you are self-publishing. Understand who your target audience is, and go where they are and share. In addition, focus on branding yourself and becoming the person you want others to be interested in.

What is your favorite scene from your book?

Since my book is a self-help book, there are no true “scenes” per se, but more experiences, affirmations, and lessons. But my favorite part of my book is when I wrote on attaining the greatness you desire after the storm. That part of the books became the information or tools that I needed to maintain my happiness after learning healing from the past.  I love to read books, especially self-help, but majority of the books I read told me how to get out of debt, how to have a successful marriage, how to love myself, and how to live in your purpose, but in any of the books I read I never learned how to maintain any of it. It’s easy to get out of debt, but it is hard to stay out of debt. So I further my research and taught myself, writing how to secure the happiness you have after working so hard to get it.

What three literary events would you recommend a writer in your genre attend?

Book Con in New York City

The Book Expo In New York City

Association of Writers & Writing Programs Literary Conference

Who was the first author you ever met?

 Sonia Sanchez.

When I first started out as a writer, I studied and wrote poetry. I attended an event she was at and she taught me that my words have only have power if I use them.

What’s the most interesting change in your life as a result of being a published author?

What about writing do you wish other non-writers would understand?

It’s not always an easy process. Non-writers, at times, don’t respect or take into account what a writer or author has to go through in order to produce a great project. Writing a great novel and then producing it takes work and lot of money, which can be a huge sacrifice. Believe it or not, there is a writer behind everything you need in this world. From making clothes to singing on stage, the creation of it all started with someone writing instructions or writing words (lyrics). Writers are the heartbeat to this world. Without words, honestly where would you be. Respect the process, and most important respect the people who live in front of technology to make your life easier.

What are you reading?

Around The Way Girl by Taraji P Henson

Trust by Iyana Vanzant

Oprah always asks, what do you know for sure?

I know for sure that I am my pen. I am living because of my pen. I smile everyday because my pen gives me the ability to express, release, and speak my truth. I know for sure that I am living in my purpose because my writing and coaching does not only bless myself, it has blessed others to the point that they are now writing and publishing their own stories. They giving notice and loving themselves enough to live in their truth.
